Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young child. Ford's interest in acting began when she was young. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time however, Ford realised that it was not the right venue for her. Ford decided to apply instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was not able to finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her debut on television in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
